Over 125 years ago, in 1872, Henry Goff and Frank Page left their employment
with U.S. Customs, the oldest government agency in existence today, to form the
Goff & Page Company, the oldest firm of its type in Rhode Island.
Initially operating as Customhouse Brokers, Goff & Page served the general
import trade of Rhode Island's shipping industry. In the latter part of the 1800's, with
trade becoming more truly international, the Goff & Page Company took on the
added role of international freight forwarders and in the early part of this century the
function of steamship agents was added to the business operations with the advent
of larger ships and improved port facilities. At the end of World War II, the company
added a fourth activity and became terminal operators.
When Goff & Page celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1972, tribute was
paid to its president, the late Norton W. Nelson, who was commencing his 50th
year with the company. Today his son, Robert N. Nelson, serves as President of the
Goff & Page Company in its second century of successful service to its many
and varied clients.
